INCREASING THE VALUE OF MAIL THROUGH INNOVATION

POTTER SAYS COUNTRY NEEDS AND WANTS A STRONG POSTAL SERVICE

As it takes focused steps in a 10-year action plan, the Postal Service will “bump up value” through innovation, service, quality and information to “levels you never imagined,” Postmaster General John E. Potter pledged today at the National Postal Forum.

“You’re going to see these changes in packages, advertising mail and First-Class Mail,” he said. “As these changes roll out they’re going to make mail even more attractive.” Potter said new ways for mail to spur customers’ businesses will help USPS beat projections of a 15 percent drop in volume over the next decade.

POSTAL REGULATORY COMMISSION BEGINS REVIEW

The Postal Service has taken its case for five-day delivery to the Postal Regulatory Commission.

The Postal Service is required by law to seek an advisory opinion from the PRC any time a nationwide change in service is proposed. Tuesday’s filing begins this review process.

The U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors has approved management’s request to move forward with its five-day delivery proposal and to file a request for an advisory opinion with the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) on March 30.

USPS Vice President Sam Pulcrano, who has been leading an internal five-day delivery task force, also told the board today at its meeting that a website will be launched to provide customers with the details of the proposal. The website also will include a special section telling business mailers how to manage a change in delivery. The website is at: http://www.usps.com/communications/five-daydelivery.

POSTMASTER GENERAL WILL DISCUSS PLAN FOR FUTURE

Mailers who attend this year’s National Postal Forum April 11-14 in Nashville, TN, will hear firsthand about the Postal Service’s new action plan for the future. The NPF keynote address will feature Postmaster General John Potter, and special sessions led by USPS management will provide an in-depth look at the 10-year plan as well as other key topics, including five-day delivery, postal finance, business mail acceptance and Intelligent Mail services.
